What makes a hookah traditional

Height, ornament and a tighter draw. Traditional Egyptian-style pipes use a narrower stem and a heavier base, which gives a slightly restricted pull that many long-time smokers prefer. They are display pieces as much as equipment.

Height and cooling

Our traditional pipes run from 60cm to 76cm. A taller stem gives the smoke longer to cool before it reaches the hose, which is noticeable over a long session. The trade is stability and storage — a 76cm pipe wants a floor, not a side table.

Brass versus steel

Brass is the traditional material and develops a patina over time; it needs occasional polishing. Stainless steel is lower maintenance and will not corrode. Both smoke identically.

Setting one up

Fill the base so the stem sits 2 to 3cm under water, fit the grommets, attach the hose and test the draw before packing the bowl. A leak at a joint is easier to find dry than with lit coals on top.

Cleaning

Change the water after every session and brush the stem weekly. Residue in a narrow traditional stem builds faster than in a wide modern one, and it is what causes flavour ghosting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a taller hookah better?

A longer stem cools the smoke more, which is noticeable over a long session. Shorter pipes are easier to store and move.

Brass or stainless steel?

Brass is traditional and develops a patina but needs polishing. Steel is lower maintenance. They smoke the same.

How much water goes in the base?

Enough to cover the bottom of the stem by 2 to 3cm. More than that makes the draw heavy.

Why does my draw feel tight?

Traditional stems are narrower by design. If it is tighter than usual, check the grommets and clean the stem.

How often should I clean it?

Change the water every session and brush the stem weekly. Narrow traditional stems collect residue quickly.
