Description
Why height matters
The distance between bowl and water is not decoration. A taller stem gives the smoke further to travel and more time to cool, which is why full-size hookahs are noticeably smoother than short travel models. At 76cm this is the standard lounge proportion.
The session it suits
Two to four people, an hour or more, seated. It is the wrong shape for a quick solo bowl on a balcony — not because it will not work, but because you will pack a full bowl and waste most of it.
Setting up properly
Water to roughly an inch above the downstem, no more. Too much water makes the draw heavy; too little and the smoke is harsh. Pack the bowl fluffy rather than dense, and check the seal at every joint before lighting.
Heat management
Two or three coconut coals to start, rotated every ten to fifteen minutes. A heat management device removes most of the guesswork and stops the bowl scorching, which is the most common way a good session goes wrong.
Cleaning
Rinse the base and stem after each session and brush the stem weekly. Residue in the stem is what makes an old hookah taste of everything you have ever smoked in it.
Alternatives
The Brass Classic for weight and tradition; the Travel 32cm for portability.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a taller hookah smoother?
The smoke travels further before you inhale it, which gives it more time to cool.
How much water should I use?
About an inch above the end of the downstem. Too much makes the draw heavy.
How many coals do I need?
Two or three coconut coals to start, rotated every ten to fifteen minutes.
Is it too big for one person?
It works, but you will pack more tobacco than a solo session uses. The Mini set suits that better.
How often should I clean it?
Rinse after every session; brush the stem weekly to stop old flavours building up.
