Cigar Ashtrays
Ashtrays with deep wells and wide rests, sized for cigars rather than cigarettes.
Why a cigarette ashtray does not work
Two reasons. The rests are too narrow to hold a 50-ring-gauge cigar, so it rolls off. And the well is too shallow: a cigar builds a long ash that you want to keep intact as long as possible, because the ash insulates the burning end and keeps it cool.
Crystal or slate
- Crystal — heavy, formal, easy to wash, and it shows the room. A statement piece for a home setup.
- Slate — matte and understated, with two rests for sharing. Wipes clean rather than washing.
The two-rest question
If you usually smoke with someone else, two rests save passing a single ashtray back and forth. If you smoke alone, a single deep well is fine.
Placement
Away from soft furnishings and out of a breeze. Outdoors, a windproof ashtray from our general smoking accessories section handles ash better than an open cigar ashtray.
Cleaning
Crystal takes warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Slate is best wiped while still slightly warm, before ash bakes onto the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Why do cigar ashtrays have wider rests?
A cigar is far thicker than a cigarette and rolls out of a narrow rest. Cigar rests are cut to hold a 50 ring gauge or more.
Should I knock the ash off?
Not early. A long ash insulates the burning end and keeps the smoke cooler. Let it fall naturally into a deep well.
Crystal or slate?
Crystal is formal and washable; slate is understated and has two rests for sharing.
Is one suitable for outdoors?
For a breezy terrace, a covered windproof ashtray works better than an open cigar ashtray.
How do I clean them?
Warm soapy water for crystal; wipe slate while it is still slightly warm.
