Slate as a material

Matte, dark and heat-tolerant. It does not show up in a room the way crystal does, which suits people who would rather their ashtray was not the focal point. It is also naturally heavy enough to stay put.

Ash management

As with any cigar ashtray, let the ash build. The well is deep enough to take a full cigar's worth, so there is no need to tap the cigar every few minutes — which is what makes a cigar burn hot.

Cleaning, with one important detail

Wipe it while it is still slightly warm. Ash left to sit on slate bakes on and becomes considerably harder to shift. A damp cloth is enough if you do it the same evening.

Indoors and out

Slate handles a covered terrace better than crystal, but in real wind an enclosed windproof ashtray is still the right choice.
