Why cigar ashtrays are different
Two design differences, both functional. The rests are cut wide enough to hold a 50-plus ring gauge without the cigar rolling out. And the well is deep, because a cigar produces a long, coherent ash that you want to leave undisturbed.
The point of a long ash
Ash insulates the burning end, slowing the burn and keeping the smoke cooler. Knocking it off every few minutes makes a cigar run hot and taste harsher. Let it build to an inch or more, then let it fall naturally into the well.
Weight matters
A light ashtray moves when you rest a cigar on it and tips when a guest reaches across. Crystal has the mass to stay where it is put, which is most of what you are paying for.
Indoors
Crystal belongs on a table rather than a terrace. Outdoors, wind scatters ash from an open well, and a windproof ashtray works better.
Cleaning
Warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers and avoid thermal shock — pouring hot water into cold crystal risks cracking it.
