What dark leaf actually means

The tobacco is not washed to remove nicotine, so it keeps more of the leaf's own character and a higher nicotine content. The result is heavier, richer smoke with a noticeable buzz — the thing experienced smokers mean when they say a blonde-leaf session feels like nothing.

Mint over dark leaf

A deliberate contrast. Mint on blonde leaf is refreshing; mint on dark leaf is bracing, with the cool note sitting over a tobacco base rather than over sweetness. It is the combination most dark-leaf smokers start with.

Heat, which is the whole skill

Dark leaf needs less heat than blonde leaf, not more. It is drier, it scorches faster, and a third coal will ruin a bowl in minutes. Two coals, rotated, or a heat management device set conservatively.

Packing

Dense-pack it — the opposite of blonde leaf. Press it firmly into a phunnel bowl and clear the airway. Dark leaf cut is coarser and wants compression to smoke evenly.
