Description
What a V-cut does differently
A guillotine removes the whole cap; a V-cut takes a wedge out of it. The opening is deeper but narrower, which concentrates the smoke across the palate and leaves more of the cap intact to hold the wrapper together. On thin-gauge cigars especially, that reduces unravelling.
When to choose it
V-cuts suit cigars with a firm draw, because the deeper channel opens the airflow more than a shallow straight cut. On an already loose cigar it can make the draw too open, so a guillotine is safer there.
Using it
Seat the cap in the channel, line the blade up just above the cap line, and cut in one decisive motion. Hesitating is what tears wrappers, not the tool.
Care
Keep it dry and use it only on cigars. Stainless steel holds an edge well, but tobacco oils build up over time — wipe the blade occasionally.
Alternatives
Our double-blade guillotine handles up to 60 ring gauge and is the more versatile everyday choice; many smokers own both.
Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of a V-cut?
It opens the draw deeply while leaving more of the cap intact, which helps hold the wrapper together.
Which cigars suit a V-cut?
Ones with a firm draw. On a loose cigar the deeper channel can make the draw too open.
Does it fit large ring gauges?
Check the maximum gauge in the specifications above. Very thick gordos suit a guillotine better.
How do I avoid tearing the wrapper?
Cut in one decisive motion just above the cap line. Slow, hesitant cuts cause tears.
How do I maintain it?
Keep it dry, use it only on cigars, and wipe tobacco oils off the blade occasionally.
