Description

Two jets, and why not more

A single jet is precise but slow across a wide foot. Four jets light fast but can scorch the wrapper if you get too close. Two is the balance most cigar smokers settle on: wide enough to toast evenly, controlled enough not to char.

Lighting properly

Hold the flame just below the foot without touching it, rotate the cigar, and toast the edge until it glows evenly. Then draw gently while keeping the flame close. Rushing produces a lopsided burn that never fully corrects.

Butane and refilling

Use good quality butane — cheap gas leaves residue that clogs the jets, which is the usual reason a torch lighter starts sputtering. After refilling, wait a minute before lighting to let the gas settle.

Heat and storage

Never leave a butane lighter in a parked car. Pressure builds in heat, and a leaking lighter is both wasteful and dangerous.

Alternatives

The Triple Jet is faster for large ring gauges; the Soft Flame is the traditional choice if you dislike torch lighters entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a torch rather than a normal lighter?

Torch flames are hot and windproof, so they toast a cigar foot evenly. Ordinary lighter fuel can taint the first draws.

Is it refillable?

Yes, with butane. Use good quality gas: cheap butane clogs the jets.

How do I avoid scorching the wrapper?

Keep the flame just below the foot without touching it, and rotate the cigar as you toast.

Two jets or three?

Two is enough for most cigars. The Triple Jet lights large ring gauges faster.

Can I keep it in the car?

No. Heat raises the pressure inside and can cause leaks.
