Description
The problem in the Gulf
Cigars are stored at 65 to 70% relative humidity. Air-conditioned rooms in the UAE typically sit near 30%. Left out, a cigar loses moisture within days: the wrapper cracks, the burn runs hot and uneven, and the flavour turns sharp and papery. Re-humidifying a dried cigar never fully restores it.
Why cedar
Spanish cedar buffers humidity, absorbing moisture when the box is damp and releasing it when dry. It also contributes a faint aroma that cigars take on over months. It is the reason humidors are lined rather than simply sealed.
Seasoning, which cannot be skipped
A new humidor's lining is bone dry and will pull moisture from your cigars for weeks. Before using it, wipe the interior with distilled water, place a charged humidifier inside, close it, and leave it several days until the reading holds steady. Skipping this is the most common reason a new humidor ruins its first cigars.
Ongoing care
Check the hygrometer weekly. Use distilled water or humidity packs, never tap water — dissolved minerals foul the foam and encourage mould. Keep it out of direct sun and away from air-conditioning vents, which create the fastest humidity swings in a room.
Why 50 rather than 25
Humidors hold humidity best when reasonably full, and collections grow faster than people expect. If you buy boxes rather than singles, 50 is the more sensible size.
Travel
A humidor stays put. For carrying cigars, use a leather case or travel tube.
Frequently asked questions
How many cigars does it hold?
Up to 50, and it holds humidity best when reasonably full.
Do I have to season it first?
Yes. A new cedar lining is dry and will draw moisture out of your cigars until it is seasoned.
What humidity should I maintain?
65 to 70%, at a stable 18 to 21°C.
Can I use tap water?
No. Minerals foul the humidifier and encourage mould. Use distilled water or humidity packs.
Where should I keep it?
Out of direct sun and away from air-conditioning vents, which cause rapid humidity swings.
