Description
The most overlooked part of a hookah
When a hookah starts pulling badly, most people blame the packing or the coals. Nine times out of ten it is a perished grommet. Rubber hardens with heat, loses its grip, and lets air in at the joints, so the draw goes slack and the smoke thins.
What the set covers
Seals for the standard joints: bowl to stem, stem to base, hose to port. Check the sizes in the specifications above against your hookah before ordering.
Fitting them
Push the old one off, wipe the joint clean, push the new one on. No tools. If a joint still leaks, the grommet is the wrong size rather than faulty.
When to replace
Once a year for regular smokers, or whenever the draw feels loose and you can hear air at a joint. At AED 19 it is the cheapest maintenance in shisha.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know a grommet has gone?
The draw feels loose, the smoke is thin, and you can often hear air being pulled in at the joint rather than through the bowl.
Will these fit my hookah?
Check the sizes in the specifications above. Most standard stems are covered, but oversized or vintage pipes may differ.
How often should they be replaced?
About once a year with regular use, sooner if they look cracked or feel hard.
Do I need tools?
No. They push on and off by hand.
Does a bad grommet affect flavour?
Indirectly. Air leaking in dilutes the smoke, so the flavour feels weaker even with a well-packed bowl.
