Description
What rinsing does not remove
A film of molasses residue and tar inside the stem. Water runs straight past it. Over a few months that film is what makes a hookah taste of every flavour you have ever smoked in it, with mint coming through a fruit bowl and nothing tasting clean.
The three sizes and why
A long narrow brush for the stem, a wide one for the base, and a flexible one for the hose. Each is a different diameter because using the wrong brush either does nothing or gets stuck.
A cleaning routine that works
Rinse the base and stem after every session. Brush the stem weekly. Deep clean monthly with warm water and a little baking soda, then rinse thoroughly. That is enough to keep a hookah tasting neutral indefinitely.
Hoses
Washable silicone hoses can be brushed and rinsed. Traditional leather or fabric-wrapped hoses cannot be washed and must be replaced when they start carrying flavour.
What to avoid
Detergent, especially on unglazed clay bowls and brass. Warm water and mechanical brushing does the job without leaving soap behind.
Drying
Fully, before storage. A stem stored damp develops a smell that brushing will not fix.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need brushes if I rinse it?
Water does not remove the molasses and tar film inside the stem. That film is what makes old hookahs taste stale.
How often should I brush the stem?
Weekly, with a deeper clean monthly.
Can I use washing-up liquid?
Better not to, especially on clay or brass. Warm water plus brushing, or a little baking soda for a deep clean.
Can I clean the hose?
Washable silicone hoses, yes. Traditional leather or fabric hoses must be replaced instead.
Why does my hookah smell even after cleaning?
Usually stored damp. Dry every part fully before putting it away.
