Description
Not an optional extra
A lit coconut coal is around 600°C. Every session involves moving them — off the burner, onto the bowl, rotated every ten minutes, and off at the end. Without tongs that is a burn waiting to happen, and people who try to manage without end up spilling coals onto furniture.
Length is the specification that matters
Long enough to keep your hand away from the heat and to reach across a bowl without leaning over it. Short tongs make you bring your face close to a full bowl of coals, which is the position you want to avoid.
How to use them
Grip a coal at its widest point and lift, do not drag. Rotate coals rather than sliding them across foil, which tears it. Set them down on a heat-safe surface, never on a table.
Rotation discipline
Every ten to fifteen minutes, moving coals and knocking off the ash layer that insulates them. Ash is why a bowl that was fine ten minutes ago has gone cold — the coal is still burning, it just cannot reach the bowl.
Care
Let them cool, wipe off ash, keep them dry. They will outlast the hookah.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need tongs?
Yes. Lit coals reach around 600°C and need moving several times per session.
What length should I look for?
Long enough to keep your hand clear and to reach across the bowl without leaning over it.
How often should I rotate coals?
Every ten to fifteen minutes, knocking off the ash layer that insulates them.
Why has my bowl gone cold with coals still burning?
Ash build-up. Knock it off with the tongs and the heat returns.
Can I use kitchen tongs?
Not safely. Metal hookah tongs are designed for the reach and temperature involved.
