Description
The best starting point we stock
Connecticut Shade wrappers are grown under cloth, which keeps the leaf thin, pale and low in the compounds that make cigars taste sharp. The result is creamy and mild, and it forgives the mistakes new smokers make — drawing too often, smoking too fast, or not resting the cigar.
A long cigar that stays gentle
At 178mm this is a proper Churchill, usually an hour and a half. Most long cigars intensify towards the end; this one builds gently, so the final third is richer rather than overwhelming.
What to expect
Cream, light wood, a faint sweetness. It does not shout. If you have smoked a peppery Nicaraguan and found it aggressive, this is the other end of the range, and it is the better cigar for a warm evening or an afternoon.
Pairings
Coffee with milk, light spirits, or nothing at all. A heavy drink overwhelms it, which is the opposite problem to the full-strength cigars in the range.
Looking after it
Connecticut wrappers are thin and show damage easily. Handle it by the foot end rather than gripping the middle, and keep it at 65 to 70% humidity — a dry Connecticut cracks more readily than a Maduro.
Where to go next
If this suits you but you want more body, try the Dominican Robusto Maduro before moving to Nicaraguan tobacco.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a good first cigar?
Yes, probably the best in our range for that. It is mild, creamy and forgiving of technique.
How long does a Churchill take?
Around an hour and a half at a relaxed pace.
What is a Connecticut Shade wrapper?
A leaf grown under cloth, which keeps it thin, pale and mild. It is the classic mild wrapper.
What should I drink with it?
Coffee with milk or a lighter spirit. Anything heavy will overpower it.
Why is the wrapper more delicate?
Shade-grown leaf is thinner than sun-grown or long-fermented Maduro, so it cracks more easily when dry.
