Description

Why a torch rather than a flame

A soft flame flickers, bends in a breeze and carries fuel taste. A jet burns butane under pressure in a straight blue column that holds its shape outdoors and imparts nothing to what it lights. For anything you are going to taste afterwards, that matters.

Single jet, and what it suits

One flame gives precision rather than coverage. Ideal for a pipe bowl, a cigarillo, a thin ring gauge cigar or charring the foot of a larger one carefully. A wide Churchill toasted with a single jet takes patience — that is what the quad jet is for.

Filling it

Use triple-refined butane; cheap fuel clogs jets, which is the single most common cause of a torch lighter failing. Bleed the tank before refilling, fill slowly, and let it sit five minutes before lighting so the gas settles and the metal returns to temperature.

Altitude and heat

Butane lighters behave differently in high ambient temperatures. In a UAE summer, do not leave one in a car — the pressure inside rises and the seals are not intended for it.

Flying

Airlines generally prohibit torch lighters in both cabin and checked baggage. Check the rules before travelling rather than at security.

Alternatives

The Quad Jet for wide cigars; the Triple Jet Torch sits between the two.

Frequently asked questions

Why a torch instead of a normal lighter?

A jet flame holds its shape in wind and does not impart fuel taste to what you are lighting.

What butane should I use?

Triple-refined. Cheap butane clogs jets, which is the usual cause of a torch failing.

How do I refill it?

Bleed the tank first, fill slowly, then wait five minutes before lighting.

Can I take it on a plane?

Generally no. Airlines usually prohibit torch lighters in both cabin and checked bags.

Is one jet enough for cigars?

For thin ring gauges and careful toasting, yes. A wide cigar is quicker with the Quad Jet.
