Description
Three jobs, one tool
The flat disc tamps the ash and tobacco down to keep a bowl burning evenly. The spoon scrapes cake and dottle from the bowl. The pick clears the draught hole. Every one of those is needed during or immediately after a bowl, which is why this shape has not changed in a century.
Tamping is the skill
Light pressure, straight down, after the char light and whenever the burn becomes uneven. Too hard and you compact the tobacco and choke the draw; too little and the bowl goes out. More bowls are ruined by heavy tamping than by anything else.
The reamer
Cake — the carbon layer inside the bowl — should be about the thickness of a coin. Thinner and the briar is exposed to heat; thicker and it cracks the bowl as it expands. The spoon keeps it in that range.
The pick
Clears the draught hole at the bottom of the bowl, which blocks with ash and moisture and is the usual cause of a bowl that will not draw despite being packed correctly.
Using your thumb instead
People do, and it works badly. A thumb cannot tamp evenly, cannot ream, and it will get burnt. A tamper costs less than a tin of tobacco.
What goes with it
Pipe cleaners, which are the other consumable no pipe smoker manages without.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three parts for?
Tamping down the burning tobacco, reaming cake from the bowl, and picking the draught hole clear.
How hard should I tamp?
Lightly and straight down. Heavy tamping compacts the tobacco and chokes the draw — it is the most common mistake.
How thick should cake be?
About the thickness of a coin. Thinner exposes the briar to heat; thicker can crack the bowl.
Why will my bowl not draw?
Usually a blocked draught hole. Clear it with the pick.
Can I just use my thumb?
It tamps unevenly, cannot ream, and burns. A tamper costs less than a tin of tobacco.
