Description
What an English blend is
A style rather than an origin: Virginia tobaccos with oriental leaf and latakia, which is fire-cured over smouldering wood. The result is savoury, smoky and dry — the opposite direction from an aromatic blend, and an acquired taste that people who acquire it rarely leave.
Latakia, honestly described
It smells like a campfire and it tastes like one. Some people love it immediately; others find it overwhelming for the first few bowls and then cannot smoke anything else. What it is not is subtle, and it is worth knowing that before opening a tin.
The room note
Strong and smoky, and it lingers. English blends are the reason pipe smokers get asked to smoke outdoors. If room note matters where you live, the Vanilla Blend is the considerably more diplomatic choice.
Packing and smoking
Three-stage pack, char light, tamp, true light. English blends burn drier and more evenly than aromatics, which makes them more forgiving of a novice's packing — one reason experienced smokers recommend them for learning technique.
Storage
Airtight. English blends age well in a sealed tin, with latakia mellowing over years. A pouch left open dries out and loses the oriental leaf's complexity first.
Health
Pipe tobacco contains nicotine and is addictive. Adults 18+ only.
