Description

Aromatics, and what they are for

An aromatic is tobacco with a flavour casing applied, in this case cherry. The point is partly the taste and largely the room note: aromatics are what make a pipe smell pleasant to people who are not smoking it. The trade-off is that the tobacco itself sits further back than in an English blend.

The cherry

Sweet and jammy rather than sharp, with the fruit sitting on top of a mild base. It is one of the gentler introductions to pipe smoking, and a common first tin for that reason.

Packing and moisture

Aromatics are often moister than other blends because of the casing. If it feels damp, leave it in the open air for fifteen minutes before packing. Damp tobacco is the main cause of the constant relighting that frustrates new pipe smokers.

Burning cool

Sweet casings burn hotter and can bite the tongue if you puff hard. Draw slowly and let the pipe rest if the bowl gets warm to the touch.

Storage

Keep it sealed. 50g in a resealed pouch holds condition for months; decant to a jar if you buy several.

Frequently asked questions

What does aromatic mean?

The tobacco has a flavour casing applied, in this case cherry. It affects both taste and room aroma.

Is it good for a beginner?

Yes. Aromatics are mild and forgiving, which is why they are common first blends.

Why does my tongue sting?

Usually puffing too fast on a sweet aromatic. Draw slowly and let the pipe rest between puffs.

How much is in the pouch?

50g.

Should I dry it before smoking?

If it feels damp, leave it out for fifteen minutes. Aromatics are often moister than English blends.
