Description
Why the billiard is the default
A straight stem and a cylindrical bowl of moderate depth. It is the easiest shape to pack, the easiest to clean, the easiest to keep lit, and it does not favour one style of tobacco over another. Every experienced pipe smoker owns one, and almost every one started with one.
Briar
A dense, heat-resistant root burl that has been the standard pipe material for over a century. It tolerates the heat of repeated bowls, absorbs a little moisture, and develops a cake on the inside of the bowl that improves how the pipe smokes over time.
Breaking in a new pipe
Half bowls for the first several smokes, packed lightly. This builds the cake evenly from the bottom up. Rushing it with full, hot bowls is how a new briar gets scorched at the rim and never smokes well afterwards.
Packing and lighting
Three stages: loose to a third, firmer to two-thirds, firmest at the top, each checked with a gentle draw. Light in two passes — a char light that you tamp down, then the true light. This is the part that takes practice and it matters more than anything else.
Between bowls
Let a pipe rest and dry, ideally a day. Run a pipe cleaner through the stem after each smoke. A pipe smoked twice a day and never cleaned turns sour quickly.
What you need
Pipe tobacco, a tamper and pipe cleaners. The Single Jet Lighter is the controllable option for a bowl.
