Description
Why a medwakh clogs
The bore is very narrow and dokha is very fine. Ash and tobacco dust accumulate in the stem within a handful of sessions, and because the channel is so small the effect on the draw is immediate and obvious — a medwakh that was easy to smoke last week becomes hard work.
Why ordinary pipe cleaners are not ideal
Briar pipe cleaners are made for a wider bore. Some will fit a medwakh and some will jam, and a cleaner stuck in a narrow stem is worse than a dirty one. A set sized for the format avoids that.
How to clean
Tap out the ash while the pipe is cool, then work a cleaner through the stem from the mouth end. Repeat until it comes out clean. Do not force anything, especially through a wooden medwakh where the bore is not perfectly straight.
How often
Every few sessions rather than every few weeks. It takes under a minute and it is the difference between a pipe that draws freely and one that does not.
Wood care
Keep water away from a wooden medwakh. Clean the bore mechanically and wipe the exterior; soaking swells the grain and can crack it.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean a medwakh?
Every few sessions. The narrow bore clogs quickly with fine ash and dust.
Can I use normal pipe cleaners?
Some fit, some jam. Briar cleaners are made for a wider bore, and a stuck cleaner is worse than a dirty stem.
Why has the draw become hard?
Almost always a clogged stem rather than a problem with the pipe.
Can I wash a wooden medwakh?
No. Clean the bore mechanically and wipe the exterior only.
