More than a better bowl, a better stem or better tobacco. Almost every disappointing session comes down to heat: too much and the bowl scorches, too little and you get no smoke. A heat management device controls that, and it turns bowl-packing from a skill into a routine.
How it works
It sits on the bowl in place of foil and holds the coals inside a metal enclosure with a sliding or removable lid. Opening the lid increases airflow and heat; closing it reduces both. You are adjusting temperature deliberately rather than by moving coals around and hoping.
What it removes from the session
Punching foil, tearing foil, ash falling onto the bowl, coals falling off the top, and guessing. It also uses less charcoal, because the enclosure reflects heat down instead of losing it to the air.
Using it
Two or three fully lit coals, lid closed to start, opened as the bowl progresses. Give it a couple of minutes longer than foil to come up to temperature; the enclosure heats the bowl more gradually.
Cleaning
Let it cool completely, then empty the ash and brush it out. It is metal and reusable indefinitely; foil is not.
