Description

The original design

Multiple holes in a shallow clay floor. It predates the phunnel by a long way and it remains what most lounges use, because it is simple, cheap and forgiving of a heavy pack. The characteristic is a slightly drier, more open smoke than a phunnel gives.

Its known weakness

Molasses juice drains through the holes into the stem. That shortens the session and leaves the stem needing more cleaning. With a wet blend the effect is obvious; with a drier blonde leaf it barely matters, which is why this bowl and blonde leaf go together.

Packing it

Fluffy and slightly overfilled, then levelled. Because juice drains away you can be a little more generous than in a phunnel. Do not press it down — compacted molasses in a shallow bowl blocks airflow badly.

Heat

Less than a phunnel needs, since there is no juice pooling. Two coals on foil for a full bowl, rotated regularly. Shallow bowls scorch faster, so watch the flavour rather than the clock.

Cleaning

Warm water and a brush, never detergent on unglazed clay. Clear each hole individually — a blocked hole makes the draw uneven and is easy to miss.

Alternatives

The Clay Phunnel for longer sessions and wetter blends; the Silicone Bowl if you break things.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from a phunnel?

Multiple floor holes instead of one raised spire, so molasses juice drains into the stem. The smoke is drier and more open.

What shisha suits it best?

Drier blonde-leaf blends, where juice drainage matters less.

How should I pack it?

Fluffy and slightly generous, then levelled. Never compacted.

Does it need more coals than a phunnel?

Fewer, since no juice pools in the bowl. Watch the flavour rather than the clock, as shallow bowls scorch faster.

How do I clean it?

Warm water and a brush, clearing each hole individually. No detergent on unglazed clay.
