Description
Why coconut rather than quick-light
Quick-light coals contain accelerants, and you taste them — a chemical edge in the first ten minutes that no tobacco is good enough to hide. Coconut coals have no additives, no smell of their own, and burn far longer. The cost is that they take longer to light.
Lighting them
An electric coil burner or a gas stove, three to five minutes, until the coal is glowing orange across the whole surface with no black patches. A coal lit halfway produces carbon monoxide and a bad session. This is not a step to rush.
Burn time
Substantially longer than quick-light — often 45 minutes to an hour per coal, which covers most of a session with one rotation rather than three. A 1kg pack is many sessions.
Heat management
Two or three coals for a full-size bowl, one or two for a mini. Rotate every ten to fifteen minutes. Tongs are not optional and a heat management device makes the whole process considerably more forgiving.
Storage, which matters more than people expect
Coconut coals absorb humidity, and damp coals take twice as long to light. In UAE conditions keep the pack sealed and indoors. This is the single most common reason a coal 'refuses' to light.
Safety
Never light them in an unventilated room, and use a proper ashtray. Carbon monoxide from burning charcoal is a real hazard indoors.
