Description

What a phunnel does differently

A traditional Egyptian bowl has several holes in its floor, so molasses juice drains through into the stem and is lost. A phunnel has one raised central spire, which keeps the juice in the bowl where the heat can keep working on it. Longer sessions, more flavour, and a cleaner stem.

Why clay

Clay holds heat steadily and releases it slowly, which suits a long bowl. It is also unglazed, so it absorbs a little flavour over time — some smokers dedicate a bowl to one flavour family for exactly that reason.

Packing a phunnel

Fluffy for blonde leaf, dense for dark leaf, and in both cases level with the rim without covering the spire. Molasses packed over the spire blocks airflow, which is the most common phunnel mistake.

Heat management

A phunnel takes more heat than a traditional bowl because the juice is still in it. Foil with a good hole pattern, or a heat management device, which is the better answer.

Cleaning clay

Warm water and a brush, no detergent — unglazed clay absorbs soap and will give it back to you in the next bowl. Let it dry fully before storing.

Alternatives

Silicone is unbreakable and easier to clean; the Egyptian clay bowl is the traditional multi-hole design.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of a phunnel?

The single raised spire keeps molasses juice in the bowl instead of draining it into the stem, giving longer sessions and more flavour.

How do I pack it?

Level with the rim, never covering the spire. Fluffy for blonde leaf, dense for dark leaf.

Can I use soap to clean it?

No. Unglazed clay absorbs detergent and returns it in the next bowl. Warm water and a brush only.

Does it need more heat than a traditional bowl?

Slightly, because the juice stays in the bowl. A heat management device helps.

Clay or silicone?

Clay holds heat more steadily; silicone is unbreakable and easier to clean.
