Description
Why the robusto endures
The robusto is the most-smoked format in the world for a practical reason: it is thick enough to burn cool and short enough to finish in under an hour. You get the full arc of a cigar — the bright opening, the settled middle, the concentrated last third — without committing an evening to it.
Nicaraguan character
Nicaraguan leaf grows in volcanic soil and carries more pepper and body than Dominican or Honduran tobacco. In a robusto, where the ring gauge concentrates flavour, that comes through as a peppery opening that settles into earth and wood as the cigar warms.
Medium-full, in practice
Strong enough to need food beforehand, not so strong that it flattens the palate. It works after dinner or with black coffee mid-afternoon. On an empty stomach, medium-full Nicaraguan tobacco will find you out.
Getting the best from it
Cut just above the cap line with a sharp cutter, toast the foot with a torch until the edge glows evenly, then draw gently. Smoke slowly — roughly a puff a minute. Pushing a robusto makes it hot and bitter faster than any other format, because there is less barrel to absorb the heat.
Storage in this climate
Cigars need 65 to 70% humidity; UAE air conditioning runs near 30%. Anything you are not smoking this week belongs in a humidor. A dried cigar burns fast and sharp and cannot be brought back.
If this is too strong
The Churchill Connecticut is the mildest cigar we stock, and the Dominican corona sits between the two.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this cigar take to smoke?
Around 45 minutes to an hour at a relaxed pace of roughly one puff a minute.
How strong is medium-full?
Enough that most smokers want food beforehand. It has real body and pepper without being a full-strength cigar.
What makes Nicaraguan tobacco different?
Volcanic soil produces leaf with more pepper and body than Dominican or Honduran tobacco.
Do I need a humidor?
For anything beyond a few days, yes. UAE indoor air sits at around half the humidity cigars need.
What should I drink with it?
Black coffee or a dark spirit. Lighter drinks disappear against a medium-full Nicaraguan.
Is it suitable as a first cigar?
It is a reasonable second or third. For a first, the Churchill Connecticut is gentler.
