Description
The toro's advantage
A toro is longer than a robusto at a similar thickness, and that extra length is where cigars get interesting. Flavours that would be a single note in a shorter format have room to move: the opening pepper fades, a mid-section develops, and the final third concentrates.
Honduran tobacco
Honduran leaf sits between Dominican smoothness and Nicaraguan pepper. It is earthy and leathery, with body that arrives gradually rather than announcing itself in the first few puffs. That suits a longer format, where a sharper tobacco would tire the palate.
How to pace it
An hour or more, roughly a puff a minute. If the cigar gets hot the flavour turns bitter and no amount of resting recovers it fully. Put it down between puffs rather than holding it lit in your hand.
Burn and touch-ups
Long cigars are more prone to uneven burns, usually because of a rushed light. If one side runs ahead, touch the lagging side with a flame briefly rather than letting it correct itself.
Storage
65 to 70% humidity in a humidor. A toro dries more slowly than a slim corona but suffers just as much once it does.
Related formats
The Honduran Gordo is thicker and fuller; the Nicaraguan Robusto is shorter and peppier.
Frequently asked questions
What is a toro?
A cigar longer than a robusto at a similar ring gauge, usually running an hour or more.
How does Honduran tobacco taste?
Earthy and leathery with real body, but less sharp pepper than Nicaraguan leaf.
Why did my cigar burn unevenly?
Usually a rushed light. Toast the foot fully before the first draw, and touch up the lagging side with a flame if it happens.
How long will it last?
Around an hour, sometimes longer at a slow pace.
Should it be stored in a humidor?
Yes, at 65 to 70% humidity. Air-conditioned rooms are far too dry.
